Hunger for Hilton 2012

This weekend we did a 30 Hour Famine to benefit the Hilton Food Shelf and Hilton Coat Closet. This was our 4th Annual Hunger for Hilton! We brought in lots of food and clothing donations for the community. We had 14 teens and 5 leaders participate in the famine! Our biggest turn-out ever!

Here is a group photo of everyone who participated, and you can see more picture on our Flickr and Facebook pages.

HfH: Lunch Devotion

During the Hunger for Hilton 30 Hour Famine, we will be having devotions at meals and bed time.

Derrick did the devotion at lunch, from Psalm 115.

1 Not to us, LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.
2 Why do the nations say,
   “Where is their God?”
3 Our God is in heaven;
   he does whatever pleases him.
4 But their idols are silver and gold,
   made by human hands.
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
   eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears, but cannot hear,
   noses, but cannot smell.
7 They have hands, but cannot feel,
   feet, but cannot walk,
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.
9 All you Israelites, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.
10 House of Aaron, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.
11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.
12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us:
He will bless his people Israel,
he will bless the house of Aaron,
13 he will bless those who fear the LORD—
   small and great alike.
14 May the LORD cause you to flourish,
   both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD,
but the earth he has given to mankind.
17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,
   those who go down to the place of silence;
18 it is we who extol the LORD,
   both now and forevermore.
   Praise the LORD.

HfH: Breakfast Devotion

During the Hunger for Hilton 30 Hour Famine, we will be having devotions at meals and bed time.

Amy did the devotion at breakfast, from Job 23:12.

12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.

We need to focus on God and the work that we're doing for the community, not on the hunger or the worldy things that distract us (like our electronics).

Treasure the bible and its words. Commit them to your memory. Memorize a bible verse that means something to you, and think of it often.

HfH: Bedtime Devotion

During the Hunger for Hilton 30 Hour Famine, we will be having devotions at meals and bed time.

Paula and Josh did the bedtime devotions just before lights out, from Genesis 28:20-21.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the LORD will be my God.

A brief background of the story:
Jacob tricked his father, Isaac, into getting a blessing meant for his brother, Esau. Jacob was very scared, so he left. Jacob was on his way to Laban, a relative, to marry his daughter, when he stopped for the night in the desert. Jacob had a dream with a stairway between heaven and earth. God tells Jacob:
“I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” (Genesis 28:13-15)
Jacob decides to listen to God, and he makes his vow to God in Genesis 28:20-21.

Things happen to us that may not be good, or be things that we like. Things happen so others can see the glory of God in us. We need to trust that God will get us through it, even if it seems like it will take a long time, as in Jacob's situation. God's promise was not going to happen overnight. It took a long time for Jacob to get his descendants and to build a land. It is not an easy decision to trust God, but it's worth it.

Where do you find it difficult to trust God?

HfH: Dinner Devotion

During the Hunger for Hilton 30 Hour Famine, we will be having devotions at meals and bed time.

Bob did the the devotion for dinner, from Psalm 145:14-15.

14 The LORD upholds all who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.

Bob extended the passage a little bit to Psalm 145:13-18.

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises
and faithful in all he does.[a]
14 The LORD upholds all who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.
18 The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

God is providing us with an everlasting kingdom. After we give our lives to Him, we will be able to live forever with Him. God provides us with everything that we need and always helps us when we ask.

Going without food for 30 hours is tough. Ask for strength and guidance during the next 24 hours until we get food again.

What are some ways God has helped you today?
